Diarrhea in Gouldian Finches

                                         Diarrheas in Gouldian Finches

Diarrhea is a natural mechanism of protection of the body so much for humans as for animals and this is provoked for several factors, mainly nutritious and pathological factors. The symptomaticDiarrhea in Gouldian. presentation is very similar in all the infestation forms, it is not easy to define it’s diagnose without the tests of a Veterinarian laboratorie, having little time for its treatment, we should take some measures to help the bird.

The symptoms of illness of the birds are visibly presented when they are no longer able to hide them, weak birds always try not being detected either by their partners or by  predators, it is a natural defense  acquired in wild life for their survival but at the same time makes us to have very little time to help.

Diarrheas have different causes and the breeder with experience or without it should guess or deduce which could be. Diarrheas can be of strong or chronic course and those most vulnerable are the young’s and olds, because they are having, lowers levels of immunity.

Diarrheas can be caused for:

1 – Bacteria’s

2 – Virus

3 – Mushrooms

4 – Parasites

5 – Foods

6 – Stress

7 – Chemical sensibility

8 – Others

There is lot of literature about treatment of diarrheas, its medications and cautions to avoid them.

One of the most common causes is:

– lack of hygiene.

– abrupt changes of medications in the water.

– polluted foods, not drinkable or infected water and the traveling Gould. (They are the Gould that are transferred from one place to another)

All symptoms of diarrheas are not common, some are more liquid, others with different colors, different odors.(dehydration).

All  birds with diarrheas do not necessarily means illness symptoms;  many times they are digestive process,  unbalance in proteins feeding, excess of vegetables, high content of milky, sugar, change of intestinal PH and hormonal irritation (Females laying eggs).

Many times because  the not ideal conditions of the aviary or of the cages we are not able to absorb the droppings, also in  nests it becomes difficult  to tell which one of the chick is affected by diarrhea, only symptomatology  tells us that it is sick.

The treatments to cure diarrheas depends on the pathological diagnose and medications to use can be many different. Today I want to speak of a treatment or procedure to combat diarrheas without knowing the indicated medication.

Their droppings can occur with different cadences, diarrheas between pauses and lineal diarrhea (dehydration).

Treatment or experience when treating a Gouldian with diarrhea.

When I notice an infected gouldian I do not treat him right away, in general I look first for several symptoms to be able to determine the right treatment.

A – Physical State.

If it flies, sings or not, feathers are fluffed up, apathy, the abundance of droppings, their texture etc.Diarrhea

B – Behavior.

Remote, immobile, if it presents anal rhythmic convulsions (caudal movements)

C – Time

Time plus symptomatology is the key to decide if it will be treated or not, because some of these diarrheas are transitory.

Treatment to diarrheas without caring their origin

Never treat the aviary in a general way to combat diarrheas, unless in extremely obligatory case.

–  separate the affected birds to avoid possible infection.

–  put the sick bird in an individual cage that you can control with easiness without having to be moved in their treatment.

–  offer fresh drinking water with a dosage of rehidratatión salts for 3 to 5 days.aminoplasmal

– If not having the rehidratation salts, one can make a homemade treatment,  add a teaspoonful of  common salt and 6 teaspoonful of sugar in a liter of water, this helps considerably to  dehydration doesn’t exist (fatal  causes, death).

–  offer a warm room with a temperature above 32 to 38 celcius degrees, good temperature so that the bird can balance her corporal thermal waist. You can use an incandescent bulb, or a place that fulfills the temperatura.

– To offer serums aminoplasmol together with vitamin, 5 cc every 12 hours via sub-cutaneous.Diarrea

These serums are fundamental so that the birds don’t fall in a  caquéctic state  (extreme weight lost) because many breeders when seeing their Gouldians picking the food believe they are  eating well but not , this bird fights to survive, most of the times are not able to peel the seed. Using sub-cutaneous aminoplasmol gives them time to recover. I believe that it is fundamental to help him to nurture, without this help most of times they died.

Diarrhea– offer feeding via Oral, the same one that is administered sub-cutaneous, it is more effective in nestlings. This way should be injections in the crop.

– Cleaning of the anal area, of possible urea’s which makes difficult the exit of the droppings, many times this obstruction is noticed at first sight, a swollen sticky white area around the anus.

–  clean all remainings of droppings from the nest, claws and beak.

If we take these small measures to combat or to prepare the bird in their resistance Diarreasto diarrheas, we will notice that it is not so difficult saving many Gouldians that died for this cause. These first aids should go subsequently of the specified treatment indicated by diagnose, be bacterial, viral, parasitic or micotic infestation.

With this small article we wish to cooperate with those friends that  write us asking advise concerning  diarrhea troubles.
